In a new report, the World Health Organization concluded that bacon causes cancer, along with other processed meats such as sausages and hot dogs.

In case you haven’t already heard the news, last week the World Health Organization released a report concluding that processed meats such as bacon, sausage, and hot dogs cause cancer. Processed meats fall into “Group 1” carcinogens, meaning that they are now ranked alongside cigarettes and asbestos in terms of causing cancer.

After studying more than 800 epidemiological studies, a 22 scientists who were invited by the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer found that there is strong evidence that eating processed meat causes colorectal cancer. Causing almost 50,000 deaths a year, colorectal cancer is the second most deadly cancer in the United States. Processed meats may also cause stomach cancer, but the evidence is not 100% conclusive.

Red meat was classified as a Group 2A carcinogen, as there is strong evidence of a link between red meat and colorectal cancer, and possibly even pancreatic and prostate cancer.
